Thai Tuesday: Part 10 – The Grand Finale and "Big Money"

Congratulations! You’ve officially made it to the final week of our 10-week Thai language challenge. Over the last two months, you have learned how to navigate the busy streets, haggle at the markets, order delicious street food, and make genuine connections with the locals. You’ve moved from "clueless tourist" to a "welcome guest," and that is something to celebrate!

To wrap up our journey, we’re looking at how to celebrate your progress and tackling the big numbers that will make you feel like a true local—whether you're at the bank, looking at real estate, or just dreaming big!

Celebrate Your Progress

In Thailand, success is often met with great enthusiasm. Here are a few ways to join in the celebration:

  • Geng maak! – You are very talented/skilled! (Tell yourself this—you’ve earned it!).

  • Chai-yo! – Cheers / Hurrah! (The go-to phrase for a celebration).

  • Rak Thailand – I love Thailand. (The ultimate sentiment to leave with).

  • Chok dee – Good luck!

Counting 91 to 100

You are just ten steps away from the century mark. Let’s finish this count strong!

  • 91 – Gow-sip-et

  • 92 – Gow-sip-song

  • 93 – Gow-sip-sam

  • 94 – Gow-sip-see

  • 95 – Gow-sip-haa

  • 96 – Gow-sip-hok

  • 97 – Gow-sip-jet

  • 98 – Gow-sip-baird

  • 99 – Gow-sip-gow

  • 100 – Nung-roy (1 hundred)

The "Big Money" Numbers

Once you hit 100, the logic of "stacking" numbers stays the same, but the names for the larger units are unique to the Thai language. If you're looking at tour prices, hotel stays, or even buying a condo, these are the ones you need:

  • 1,000 – Neung-pan (One thousand)

  • 10,000 – Neung-muen (Ten thousand)

  • 100,000 – Neung-saen (One hundred thousand)

  • 1,000,000 – Neung-laan (One million)

Trunk Travel Tip: If you can master up to "Neung-laan," you are officially ready to handle any major transaction in the country. Whether you're navigating a high-end boutique or just want to understand the price of a local villa, these big numbers give you the confidence of a seasoned expat. Remember, being a "Baht Millionaire" only takes about $31,000 USD, so start practicing that "Neung-laan"!

We have loved having you on this 10-week journey. While the challenge is over, your learning doesn't have to be. Keep using your phrases, keep smiling, and most importantly, keep exploring this incredible country.

Chok dee and see you on the road!
