Bangkok. The name conjures images of bustling markets, gleaming temples, and incredible street food. It also, for a good portion of the year, means heat. And as Thailand officially ushers in its summer season (which, let's be honest, often feels like it's been summer forever!), the mercury is set to soar even higher, especially from mid-March to April. We're talking temperatures that can easily top 40°C in some areas, including the northern regions of Mae Hong Son, Lampang, and Tak.
But don't sweat it (pun intended!). While Bangkok's heat is legendary, navigating it is all part of the adventure. And thankfully, the city is stepping up its game to help everyone stay cool.

Bangkok's Newest Lifesavers: Cooling Shelters!
In a fantastic move to combat extreme heat, Bangkok has opened 190 "cooling rooms" across all 50 districts! These aren't just for locals; visitors are welcome too. Think of them as your personal oasis from the urban jungle. They offer:
Blessed Air-Conditioning & Fans: The ultimate relief.
Comfortable Seating: A perfect spot to rest your weary feet.
Reading Corners & Drinking Water: Rehydrate and relax.
And more! Some even offer Wi-Fi or TV programs.
Locations are easily searchable online, but some examples include Wat Pathum Wanaram School in Pathum Wan District (full-time AC!), Wat Khlong Phum School in Yan Nawa District (AC, fans, Wi-Fi, reading, chilled water!), Wat Saphan School in Khlong Toei District, and Wat Samanam Borihan School in Dusit District. Keep an eye out for signs or check local government websites for the nearest one!

Beyond the Cooling Rooms: Your Essential Bangkok Heat Survival Guide:
While these cooling shelters are a fantastic resource, here are Trunk's top tips for staying comfortable and healthy during Bangkok's sizzling summer:
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! This is non-negotiable. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it constantly. Look out for electrolyte drinks (often sold as "mineral drinks" in 7-Eleven)—they're lifesavers. Forget coffee in the middle of the day; reach for an iced tea or fresh coconut water!
Embrace the Morning & Evening: Plan your major outdoor activities (like temple visits or market strolls) for the cooler parts of the day. Early mornings offer stunning light and fewer crowds. Evenings bring a different kind of magic, with night markets and rooftop bars coming alive as the temperature dips slightly.
Dress for Success (Against the Heat): Light, loose-fitting clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen is your best friend. Think light colors that reflect the sun. And while sleeveless tops are fine, remember to cover your shoulders and knees when visiting temples.
Seek Shade & Air-Con: Don't underestimate the power of a shopping mall, a BTS station, or a café. These are your urban oases. Duck in frequently to cool down. Even a few minutes in air-conditioning can make a huge difference to your core temperature.
Cooling Gadgets are Your Friend: A small portable fan (many attach to your phone!), cooling towels, or even just a simple hand fan can provide instant relief. You'll see locals using them everywhere!
Pace Yourself: This isn't the time for a marathon. Take breaks, listen to your body, and don't push yourself too hard. It's a holiday, after all!
Sun Protection is Key: A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential to protect your skin from the intense sun.
Bangkok in summer is an experience, and with a little preparation and these handy tips (and the city's new cooling shelters!), you can still have an incredible, unforgettable, and delightfully cool adventure.
